The young woman lay on the bed with her hands and legs tied down by fraying bedsheets. Deep purple bruises covered her frail body. Her gaunt face was almost the same color as the pure white sheet under her, and there were dark circles under her eyes. Her chapped and bleeding lips were turned up in a gruesome smile that revealed cracked yellow teeth.

Lao Lao
Michael Thomas Villagomez

A monitor lizard, three feet long from head to the tip of its tail, sits ever so still upon a log from a fallen tree in an open field under the gleaming sun. Its black skin splattered with yellow spots absorbs the rays that are necessary to the lizard's survival. The air is still, say for the buzzing of insects and pungent smell of overripe fruit, as the reptile perches its head up at an angle, its eyes closed as it basks while its claws gleam, reflecting the light of the sun. It lays there as still as the wood it is perched upon. Though out in the open, the lizard stays within a short distance from the umbrage and foliage that is the jungle.

Sleep Paralysis
Brooklyn Christofis

She came to me in a dream, my mother.

She came to me in a dream, in that house, in my dream. She still lives in it on the other end.

But no, not the house in my dream. In memories, in dreams. The one not of dreams, no, but of memories. Yes. In memories. Of childhood.

The Strange Manor
Melissa Wade

The house along the side of the road had not been there before. It had the appearance of an old English manor and therefore stood out like a sore thumb among the two-story suburbans. By the time Eleanor was able to roll down her window all the way, it had vanished from view.

Flagstaff, Arizona gets quiet at night like other smaller cities tend to do. More importantly, the sun goes down quickly, the orange street lights melt on in a haze and then the mountain town gets dark. In 2021, on an October night, it was way too dark for Jessica to feel at ease.
